Breath of Life Testimony: Malcolm

The mentor which was assigned to me is Douglas S. Before I began the Setting Captives Free course, I was addicted to smoking two packs of cigarettes a week.
While this was a sin that I initially repented of upon becoming a Christian, many years later, a hardening of my heart and a lack of gratitude had me smoking again.

I became so small minded and sensual that physical stimulation literally became my god. I became selfish, deceitful and isolated in order to smoke my cigarettes. In addition to myself, I put the physical and spiritual health of my wife and baby in jeopardy for the sake of my smoking. Ultimately, I suppressed the truth about God through my self-deception and idolatry.

Starting the lessons reminded me of my need for fulfillment, satisfaction and spiritual nourishment. The scriptures and lessons made it so clear how Jesus was the only source for this need and I began to replace the stimulant of nicotine with the nourishing words of Jesus.

The daily guidance of scripture empowered me to connect the dots of trusting and obeying, so that I began to see the true pathetic and filthy nature of my sin. This made it easier to turn from smoking and to turn to God. Along the way, I have still struggled with greed, lust and anger. What's encouraging to me is these sins have always been triggers for me to smoke, but they are no longer such.

Repenting of all idolatry so as to be nourished and fulfilled by Jesus alone is something I still need tremendous help with. Nevertheless, I can say that this course has been uniquely surgical in a precise manner by helping me to specifically eradicate the sinful practice of smoking and that is to Gods' glory!
