Day 2 - Part 1

Dear Friend,

Welcome back to Day 2 of the course "By His Wounds." Yesterday we studied the lesson called "Our Bodies, His Temple" and today the lessons is titled...

"Our Motivation, God’s Glory."

Right from the start here in this course, we must understand the following foundational truth in order to find true and lasting change from the self-harm habit. The truth is that, in order to find victory in carrying out a battle plan against any sinful self-harming habit, our motives must be right. And what is the "proper motive," you ask? The biblical motive to find freedom must be the glory of God.

Motive is behind everything we do and in order to have lasting change from destructive self harm our motives must be right. Our motivation needs to be that we begin to desire freedom for God’s glory, not just so our lives get better, although this will indeed be a by-product.

We have hope for real change when our focus is on God and doing it for His glory and not because we were able to "achieve success" by our own efforts.

Question 1

What has been your motive in the past? Have you self harmed to gain a sense of control, a sense of escape, a cry for help? What were/are those reasons?

Maybe you don’t know why you self harm, or how to get free from it. Maybe it’s simply to "feel" because you have become so numb. This is true of a lot of people. Ask God to show you the root causes, the reasons and motivations behind the self-harming, and then ask Him to change your motives to desire God’s glory above all else. If He begins to make this change in you there is hope for real and lasting freedom.

Before we look into this idea of God’s glory, let’s notice what we become when we are mastered by anything in our lives. Please examine the following passage of Scripture and write your thoughts on it:

19 They (false teachers) promise them freedom ...
