Day 1 - Part 2
So, it is quite clear from John 15:5 that we desperately need Jesus Christ, that we can do nothing apart from Him, and that we are dependant upon Him for all things. Nowhere is this more true than when fasting. Fasting does some amazing things to both our minds and our bodies. During this fast that you are about to undertake, there are certain common things that happen to everybody, which you would do well to prepare in advance for. They are:
Initial cravings for food. These greatly diminish on the 3rd or 4th day of the actual fast, as the appestat mechanism (that which signals hunger to the brain) shuts down. These cravings also are greatly diminished by drinking juice and liquids. Try to use fruit and vegetable juices that are organic, if possible. If not, simply use whatever is on hand.
A sense of being "fuzzy headed" or a lack of clarity of thought. Again, this is a temporary situation as the body adjusts to the lack of food. This sense of having "unclear thoughts" is not severe, I was able to do my job just fine (flying airplanes) during the entire fast, as were the many others who accomplished this fast. Because our bodies are receiving the necessary nutrients, vitamins and minerals through the juices and vegetable broths clarity of thought does return once the body adjusts to the change in diet.
A sense of peace, overall calmness, or quietness. This is a sensation that hits sometime in the first week. It is an amazingly quiet experience that others have described as "amazingly peaceful."
Feelings of euphoria. This sense can be quite powerful and usually hits within the first two weeks. It is a combination of the body’s digestive function shutting down and going into rest mode, and the evidence of much weight loss, combined with a greater intimacy with Jesus Christ for those who seek Him.
A decrease in bodily temperature.
There are "up days" and "down days" while fasting; good times of much greater enjoyment of the Lord, and days of difficulty with ...
