Day 1 - Part 3
Lord’s Table, Phase I, Lesson 1
As we begin our study and implement a plan to change our eating habits, it’s important to understand a foundational truth: if we want to change any sinful eating habit, our motives must be right. What is the right motive? The proper biblical motive for losing weight must be the glory of God.
Most dieters are motivated to lose weight by a desire for personal glory; they want to slim down in order to fit in that outfit, look good at their class reunion, hear others comment on how good they look… or maybe they just want to be healthy and feel better about themselves. As innocuous as these motives may seem, they all grow out of self-worship, which should have no place in the heart of the Christian who professes to worship God.
During my years of being overweight, I tried one diet after another, always seeking that correct combination of foods or the denial of certain other foods that would make me lose weight so I would look and feel good and so that others would notice me. But, looking back, I see these motives were all wrong; it was all about me. It was for my own glory, and that’s why it never lasted.

Friend, if we set out on this course to control our weight for our own glory, we can not expect God's assistance. Since God is the greatest good, He sets out to work all things for His own glory, and if we seek to control our weight for our own glory, we are at cross-purposes with God. He will not share His glory with another.
