Now that we understand our purpose, let me tell you that there is great hope in having the glory of God as our motivation! If we have a purpose in our hearts to glorify God, we are working in concert with God and He will enable us to do what we seek to do. Please don't miss this. Proper motive in losing or controlling weight (the glory of God) will ensure our success, as God Himself comes to our aid so that He would be glorified. Do you see it?

Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. — 1 Corinthians 10:31

Question 2

What should the Christian's motive be for losing and/or controlling weight?

We must make the connection that eating in a disciplined manner, which enables weight control, is honoring to the Lord. Indeed, He is glorified in the daily choices we make to turn away from gratifying our flesh by overeating, throwing up, or starving ourselves. Now, this is not to say that all who eat in a disciplined manner are glorifying God. Obviously, such is not the case, as there are many thin people who are living their lives for their own glory. But, it is to say that the motivation for the Christian must be to honor the Lord in everything, including how we feed our bodies.

Some time ago, I recognized that I had the wrong motives for trying to lose weight, and God convicted my heart about having the proper motives. I remember when I first confessed to Him that I had been dieting for my own selfish reasons, to draw attention to myself and to feel good about myself. It was a time of deep sorrow in my heart, for I saw that I was attempting to rob God of some of His glory. I remember kneeling by my hotel room bed and praying something like this, "Father, I have gone about this weight loss ...
