Day 1 - Part 4
This verse makes an important point: When we make daily choices to care for our bodies—which includes acting in a manner not controlled by intoxicating influences—God is glorified. Of course, sobriety alone doesn’t guarantee that we are glorifying God: There are many people who have never tasted alcohol but live for their own glory. But the motivation for the Christian must be to honor the Lord in everything. Our goal is not to be like everyone else: It is to live as God wants us to, and to seek God in everything we do!
Remember Jeff's story from the introduction? This is what he had to say about his motivation: “I wanted to be free from alcohol and drugs to stop the pain and to keep from losing everything I had, including my life. I wasn't concerned about 'holiness' in this; I just wanted to find peace in my life. I wanted to keep pursuing my desires and to drink like other people, but not live like a drunk. I wanted to be able to smoke a little or take drugs with my friends for ‘fun,’ but not be controlled by them. I wanted to be like everybody else. But God had other plans for me. He eventually led me to the right motivation. He gave me peace and freedom from the pain of what I had become. He also gave me so much more—a family, friends, even a purpose.”
Take a look at Matthew 6:33:
Do you want freedom from alcohol and drug addiction even though it may have plagued you for years? Do you long to be the man or woman God wants you to be? Take this verse to heart. Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness!
